EDGEWOOD PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE:

MINUTES OF OUR LAST CIVIC ASSOCIATION MEETING:

Our last meeting was in May. The main topic of discussion was Whiddon-Rogers. More specifically the fact that the school buses were once again cutting through the neighborhood enroute to their campus. We assured our residents that we would follow up on their concerns.

GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS AND UPDATES:

In reference to the school bus issue stated above. We met in person with Maureen Dinnen (our school board elected representative) in May and most recently in August about this situation. She assured us that the protocol long established is for the buses to enter and exit the neighborhood via 4th avenue. Ms. Dinnen reminded the principal of this and was assured that this protocol would be followed. If it is not please e-mail us so that we can follow up.

Just so you know the Edgewood Civic Association, Inc. is a 501-C registered non-profit. A new IRS ruling makes it a requirement to file every year (that was heretofore not the case for non-profits making less than $25,000 per year). Anyway the deadline was in June. The penalties were severe as you can well imagine. It was reported in the newspaper that many non-profits did not comply. Well rest assured we filed IRS form 990 just in the nick of time. Bottom line....we're totally legit.

Currently, the Floyd-Hull playing fields are being shared by both baseball and football programs. This was a situation negotiated by our former City Commissioner. Well in short it has proved to be a logistical disaster. Neither the neighborhood, the participants or the City like the situation. To that end our current city commission, Romney Rogers, is seeking a permanent home for the football program over at the playing fields at Croissant Park Elementary. Commissioner Romney and the Parks and Recreation Dept. director Phil Thornburg have done an excellent job in finding monies to adapt those fields over at Croissant for football. There are a couple of pieces to the puzzle still missing. One of which are bathroom facilities for the kids. To that end Edgewood Civic has been very involved bringing the School Board and City officials together to work out an agreement in which the kids could use the existing school's bathroom facilities that are located adjacent to the playing fields. We'll keep you posted. This would save the City tons of money.

In our last newsletter we made an appeal to have our residents participant in our LAWN FUND. Our dues receipts are way down due to the recession. This fund is to specifically pay for lawn maintenance of our club-house. We currently pay $80 per month. This is our major operating cost. Ron Soloman was the only person to respond with a very generous check for $100. We made the same sort of appeal when we established our sewer fund which allowed our club-house to be hooked up. Please send in what you can. we'll acknowledge all contributors.

Despite many years of fighting it appears as though the County is still going to recommend that BARC (broward addiction and recovery center) be co-located across from the Seaqull School. It comes up for a vote later this month. This would not be good for Edgewood. We have been fighting this for over 10 years!!! Let me know if you could possibly attend the commission meeting. Again I anticipate this will be the 3rd Tuesday in September during a late morning or early afternoon session.

NEWS FLASH: The County Commission voted on 8/31 to relocate the SEXUAL ASSAULT AND TREATMENT CENTER (SATC) on the vacant lot located at NE corner of SW 15th Ave and State Rd. #84. This is a huge development. Why is it that 8 out of 10 social service agencies serving all the residents of Broward County are located in Fort Lauderdale?

Our first meeting of the new season will be October 6th at 7:30 at out club-house. Please mark it down.

See you soon.....

CLIFF IACINO, president
