May 2010 Newsletter
EDGEWOOD PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE:
MINUTES OF THE LAST MEETING:
Unfortunately our April and May meetings were lightly attended. As a result it was abbreviated in length and scope. We had a very interesting report from our neighborhood officer about crime in Edgewood.
We had a few neighbors come and complain about the school bus traffic patterns in and around the Whiddon-Rogers School. Please read below for the follow-up action taken. We would like to thank Debbie Nast for her help.
GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS AND UPDATES:
First and foremost remember that we normally take the summers off in terms of our meetings. This year will be no different. Our next meeting will be in October. Please refer to our monthly newsletter for important issues or actions that might need to be taken during that time.
Edgewood met for one hour with Maureen Dinnen, our School Board representative for Edgewood. She is a wonderful person. She clearly understood the problem with the school buses for Rogers-Whiddon coming in and out of 9th Ave, when in fact they should be using 4th Ave for that pupose. This had been resolved years ago, however, it seems like old patterns have surfaced again. We understand the there is a new principal coming to the school shortly. In any event Miss Dinnen will follow up with us on this. We will report to all of you as soon as we know something definitive.
A somewhat controversial situation has arisen! As you may or may not know, St. Jerome has a new paster, Father Davis. One of the decisions he has made is that St. Jeromes will no longer support the Edgewood Civic Association, via it's newsletter. This came as quite a surprise, needless to say. This breaks a very very long 48 year tradition of support that we have always enjoyed. I would very much like to hear your thoughts on the matter. He seems to convey economics as the prime reason for his decision, however, I suspect other factors are at play! Let us know what you think.
MEMBERSHIP APPEAL:
Though we are financially sound, this year due to the 'great recession' our membership dues and other revenues are way way down. Though our operating costs are 'minimal' we still are short every month. Let me remind everyone that Edgewood is the only civic association in the City that owns it's own meeting hall. With that status comes a big responsibility that other civic associations simply don't have.
We need to raise $600 to pay for lawn service for the club-house. We are going to set up a separate fund for this. We ask all our members to send in what they can so that we can properly maintain our building. Mark you check under memo as 'lawn service'. We will acknowledge via the newsletter all those who contribute.
Thank you so much. Our e-newsletters will continue throughout the summer.
